When the Left cares about Religious Freedom/Private Property Rights
Aug 18th
Yes they care only when a mosque is being built at the World Trade Center. Almost every progressive from Jon Stewart to our beloved President, has come out in favor of it. As if it is their duty to defend Muslims’ religious freedom and private property rights. I think the reason they do this is because they see Muslims as a minority and feel they must defend all minorities. They think of them as being outnumbered and weaker, politically speaking. Progressives are acting as if it is their duty to balance out the scales in favor of minorities over the majority. It is like they are enforcing their own Affirmative Action program. But is this the crux of the argument?
Here is the deal, no one is arguing against Muslims’ right to build a mosque and practice their faith on Ground Zero. They have every legal right. But the issue at hand is the insensitivity shown to the families who lost their loved ones. To build a humongous shrine on a place where thousands of Americans died is disrespectful to say the least. It could be interpreted as a symbol of victory, as if to state “This is where (radical) Islam beat America on American Soil for the first time” It is insulting. This can and should be done differently. There is a better way. But unlike the Left, proponents of the Mosque do not subscribe to the idea that the government should stop the building from going up. Government intrusion is not the answer. We want common sense solutions. We want what is reasonable. And what is reasonable is not to build the Cordova House on Ground Zero. To many Americans this is a sacred place. A place that should be separated and left alone. A place where we always remember what happened on that frightful day. Peace be upon the souls who died there.
Are We Prepared For Nuclear Terrorism on US Soil?
Apr 15th
From the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, comes a document called “Planning Guidance for Response to a Nuclear Detonation”. The document was first drafted over a year ago, but has not been publicly available until recently. This document is targeted towards local government leaders and seeks to advise them on strategies for “maximizing life” in the event of a nuclear detonation in a US city. According to USA Today, the document urges state and local governments to prepare for the event because federal aid is not likely to arrive for 2-3 days after the explosion. It is interesting to note how they expect the event to unfold and how it could affect people for 100s of miles around the blast radius. This means that a blast in the epicenter of Atlanta could even present problems for Albany, Birmingham and Columbia.
